Major in Spanish - Language Studies

Love Spanish? Take 12 upper division courses with C- or better to get a major in Spanish Language Studies

1. Improve your language skills

Take two years of Spanish language or equivalent proficiency

1st year: LISP1A/AX-LISP1B/BX-LISP1C/CX

2nd year:  LTSP2A-LTSP2B*-LTSP2C

2nd year for heritage speakers: LTSP2D-LTSP2E

 *Students who have completed LISP 1D/1DX need to request the permission of the instructor to take LTSP 2B

2. Learn about Spanish language and Linguistics (6 LIGN courses)

  • LIGN 101 Introduction to the Study of Language
  • LIGN 143 The Structure of Spanish, or LIGN 178 Spanish Sociolinguistics
  • Choose three core linguistic courses from:

LIGN 110 Phonetics; LIGN 111 Phonology; LIGN 120 Morphology; LIGN 121 Syntax; LIGN 130 Semantics; LIGN 145 Pidgins and Creoles; LIGN 150 Historical Linguistics

  • 1 additional upper-division LIGN course

3. Learn about Spanish Literature (2 courses)

Take 2 upper-division courses in Spanish Literature (LTSP).

4. Explore the area of study (4 courses)

Choose from Linguistics (LIGN courses), Literature (LTSP courses), Music, Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, Latin American Studies, History, or Theater.

Minor in Spanish – Language Studies

Love Spanish? Take 7 courses (two lower-division and 5 upper-division) to get a minor in Spanish Language Studies

 1. Improve your language skills (2 courses)

Take two lower-division language courses (8 units). Choose from:

  • LTSP 2B, 2C, 2D or 2E

*Students can request LISP 15, 16, 17, and 18 to be considered if they test out of the LTSP courses.

2. Learn how Spanish works (2 courses)

Take two Linguistics courses (LIGN):

  • LIGN 101 Introduction to the Study of Language, and
  • LIGN 143 The Structure of Spanish, or LIGN 179 Spanish Sociolinguistics (or other approved course)

3. Learn about Spanish literature (1 course)

Take an upper-division course in Spanish Literature (LTSP).

4. Explore the area of study (2 courses)

Choose from upper-division courses in Linguistics, Literature, Music, Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, Latin American Studies, History, or Theater.
